Because I drove a rental-spec Nissan Altima SV, and kinda I liked it.

At the very least it’s an improvement over my mom’s Camry which someone hit, for the second time, presumably because it looks so anonymous and sad on the road. Fortunately no injuries - it happened in a parking lot - and the loaner car is a 6th-gen Altima with 55,000 km on the clock, a cloth interior, and Bluetooth connectivity from 8 years ago. Really, the system feels like only a marginal improvement from my 2006 Infiniti. It’s probably worth it to get the nav option on this.

It actually feels pretty quick in the city. At lights it moves quick off the line, handles fine, is roomy inside, and doesn’t look so bad (definitely not worse than the Camry’s new nose). And the thing I like most about it is actually the CVT. In this car is makes sense and also works ok-ingly. There’s only 174 HP on tap to move 3200 lbs of car and the CVT makes it feel like you’re always in the rev range... in the city. There’s not enough go at higher speeds to make this a great passing car on the highway, but I suspect many people driving these things aren’t too concerned with that anyway.

I much prefer the Altima to the Hyundai Elantra I rented for my Eastern Canada trip. It’s boring but gets the job done well. I almost like that there’s no pretend-sporty version you can buy either. It’s just a good, regular car. My mom likes it too and may be looking at getting one. The service we’re getting from the Toyota dealer is really shitty which has finally convinced her to consider other cars once the lease is up.

After owning a 2014 pathfinder since 2015, i can say i prefere a CVT over any automatic transmission. Mine doesn’t have the fake shifts, so just smooth constant acceleration.

Mine has no rubber band feel to it like everyone says the cvts feel like.

That being said my CVT was replaced last year under warranty and CVT warranty is now 7 years instead of 5

I drove a 2017 model about 2 years ago, and it was roomy, comfortable, and had plenty of features. Visibility was acceptable, fuel economy seemed quite good.

The CVT was, in my opinion, the worst part.

If you are in an Altima in many areas, you have to drive with all of the aggression and guillotine-worthiness of a trust f und devilspawn in a new white M car . Something about these things.

The Altima and Sonata are the most regular cars of this segment. They’re roomy, comfy, quiet, good on gas and go about their business. If anything I prefer the Sonata but I don’t mind if I end up with an Altima for highway cruising in a rental.

There was a time a few years ago where I had one as a rental and hated it though, the CVT & throttle calibrations were  either all wrong, or whatever throttle learning algorithm the car uses was very confused from all the different drivers over time.

2018 is a new model year so maybe they changed something? I’ve driven other CVT cars and to my surprise this one wasn’t sluggish and didn’t have the annoying rubber band feel at the incorrect time. It also coasts  incredibly well.

Maybe they fnally got  the formula right in these models. 2018 saw a refresh.

Never buy a Nissan made CVT, it will not last much more than 100k miles. My co-workers CVT already had to be fixed after less than 5k miles and mine crapped out at 109k

I never warmed to Nissan interiors as a kid in the 90s and I still can’t today.  What was your impression of the interior materials and design?

Mediocre, but it was a rental car after all. You get leather in the highest trim but I don’t know if the interior plastics go away, or that pudgy steering wheel.

I'm pinching myself. Did someone say good stuff about an Altima? Thank you. I'm tired of everybody bagging on my car. FWIW I like my Altima.
